Flood in Anambra: One Child Missing, Nine Rescued by Police

A schoolchild is missing after a flood hit the Nibo, Isiagu Road in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State. Police have started a search for the child.

Nine people, including seven schoolchildren and two adults, were rescued from the flooded area after heavy rain fell across the state from Monday to Tuesday.

The flood happened early Tuesday morning. The victims were traveling when they got caught in the flood.

Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, shared this in a statement on Tuesday. He said the rescue operation was done by the command’s Safe School Operatives, working with members of the affected community.

Ikenga mentioned that the operatives quickly went to the scene after hearing about the flood. They managed to rescue seven schoolchildren and two adults safely.

But, he noted that one more child involved in the incident was still missing as of Tuesday. This led the police to start ongoing search and rescue operations.

He said the search is being done with help from community members and other important groups. It will keep going until they find the missing child.

The statement included, “The Anambra State Police Command, through its Safe School Operatives, in collaboration with concerned members of the community, has rescued nine persons following a flood incident along the Nibo, Isiagu Road, Awka.

“The incident occurred in the early hours of today, September 22, 2026, when some schoolchildren and adults were caught in the flood while traveling along the affected route.

“However, one additional child involved in the incident is still unaccounted for. The command has consequently activated sustained search and rescue operations in the affected area.”

Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, Nnanna Ama, ordered that the search operation continue and expand until they find the missing child.

Ama also urged residents, especially those living or working near the affected road, to share any information that could help the police and other agencies in the search.

The CP advised parents, guardians, school authorities, and drivers to be very careful around flooded roads, bridges, and waterways during heavy rain.

He specifically asked parents and guardians to make sure that children do not try to cross flooded or dangerous areas.

The police said they will keep working closely with communities and relevant agencies under the Safe School Initiative to prevent loss of lives during emergencies.
