The Ayisat Yusuf Football Academy has confirmed that one of its players died in a road accident. This incident involved members of the team while they were on their way to Lagos for a league match.
Several other players were hurt in the crash, and the team’s driver was also seriously injured. This was shared by the academy’s founder and CEO, Ayisat Yusuf.
In a statement, Ms Yusuf explained that the team was traveling from Ikenne in Ogun State to play a league match at the Olympic Pitch, Sonya, Ijesha, Lagos State, when the accident happened.
She did not reveal the name of the player who died or give details about how the accident occurred.
Describing the accident as a huge loss, the former Nigerian international and Assistant Coach with the Super Falcons said the academy lost more than just a player. She emphasized that the girls were like family.
“Beyond being members of a football team, these girls are our children, our family and a huge part of everything we have built together,” she said.
“Losing one of them is a pain that is difficult to put into words, and our hearts are particularly heavy for the family of our departed girl.”
Ms Yusuf mentioned that some of the injured players needed urgent medical care. She also called for support from the football community and the public for the affected players and their families.
She assured everyone that the academy is committed to the welfare and recovery of those injured. She promised to provide more updates as new information comes in.
This tragedy adds to a sad trend of road accidents involving Nigerian football teams and other sports groups traveling for competitions.
