The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Shehu Mohammed, has called Special Marshals a crucial part of road safety efforts in Nigeria. He said they help reduce crashes and deaths on the roads.
Mohammed made these comments on Thursday in Dutse, Jigawa State. He spoke during the ceremony where Governor Umar Namadi was named Patron of the Special Marshals and Safety Ambassador of Nigeria.
Idris Lawal, the Kano Sector Commander, represented the corps marshal at the event. He explained that Special Marshals are vital volunteers for the FRSC. They play important roles in traffic management, public awareness, gathering information, and preventing accidents.
"Their role in traffic management, public enlightenment, and intelligence gathering is invaluable to achieving our goal of reducing road traffic crashes and fatalities," he stated.
Mohammed praised Governor Namadi for his efforts in improving road safety and development in Jigawa. He noted that this recognition shows the governor's support for road safety programs in the state.
He also mentioned that Namadi's involvement would help strengthen teamwork between the state government, FRSC, and Special Marshals to promote safer roads.
Namadi, who was represented by Ahmad Sani, the Permanent Secretary of the Jigawa Ministry of Works and Transport, spoke about road safety being a shared responsibility. He said both the government and all road users need to play their part.
"While the government will continue to provide and maintain good road infrastructure, all road users must also show discipline, caution, and respect for traffic rules," he said.
The governor shared that his administration has finished 26 inherited road projects. He also mentioned starting new projects to better road infrastructure throughout the state.
He noted that these projects have improved connections and provided safer roads for the people.
The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the conference was organized by the RS1 Headquarters. This includes the Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa Sector Commands.
The theme of the conference was, "Repositioning Special Marshal for Greater Impact: Through Strategic Partnerships and Data Driven Road Safety Intervention."
Usman Ya’u, the Zonal Coordinator for Special Marshals, said the conference aimed to boost cooperation among Special Marshals and road safety partners.
Adaji Usman, the National Coordinator for Special Marshals, encouraged members to follow the dress code. He urged them not to mix official uniforms with unauthorized items.
Usman added that Special Marshals needing operational materials should use the right communication channels. He also mentioned that their identification cards would soon be ready.
The conference had participants from FRSC commands in Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa. It also included representatives from road transport unions, traditional leaders, and other stakeholders.
