Lazio coach Gennaro Gattuso has praised his players' mindset after a 3-0 victory over Juventus. In this match, Super Eagles midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru scored a late solo goal, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The Biancocelesti won at the Allianz Stadium on Sunday. With this win, they now have 19 points from seven games, tying them with leaders Inter. This is their best start in Serie A history.
Oliver Provstgaard scored the first goal for Lazio in the 37th minute. He headed the ball in from a Mattia Zaccagni corner. Gustav Isaksen added another goal in the 66th minute with a left-foot shot.
Dele-Bashiru came off the bench in the 69th minute, replacing Kenneth Taylor. He secured the win in the 89th minute.
The 25-year-old picked up the ball in his half, drove into the box, and finished low past the Juventus goalkeeper. This was his first goal of the season, coming just a week after he returned from a hamstring injury he got against Bologna on August 24.
This is only the third time Lazio has won by three goals or more away at Juventus, with similar wins in March 1964 and May 1995. Gattuso is now the first coach in Lazio history to win six of his first seven Serie A games.
“People were writing us off as dead and saying we would be fighting relegation. But our path was the right one, and the players believed in it,” Gattuso said.
He mentioned that the players finally showed the mindset they missed in earlier matches. He said the credit goes to the players.
“Congratulations to the lads. It’s been an incredible journey, and the credit belongs to them because they work seriously.”
Gattuso was also happy with the team spirit, noting the club had limited funds to spend in the summer.
“We push hard in training, but we’ve created a real family unit here.”
Gattuso is careful not to get too excited about the win.
“We must not look at the table right now. We’ll enjoy this marvelous victory, but then it’s heads down and back to work ahead of Parma,” he said.
“We’re not used to being up there, and maybe we’re not ready to be there either. But if we take it one game at a time, we can surprise people.”
Lazio plays Parma on Saturday, and a win would take them to the top of the table before Inter faces Fiorentina the next day. Dele-Bashiru, who has 19 caps for Nigeria, is set to start contract talks with the club in December.
