Good Leadership and Citizenship Are Key to National Progress

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

All praise is due to Allah, who has no equal. He revealed His Book with the truth and protects it from those who want to change it. I declare that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah alone, and Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.

May Allah bless him, his pure family, and his noble companions, those chosen by Allah who helped Islam and Muslims. He made love for them part of our faith and hatred for them a sign of hypocrisy. To continue:

Dear brothers and sisters! Remember that a nation's real progress depends on the moral state of its people. According to Islamic teachings, neither the leader nor the citizens alone can build a successful society. True success needs a strong relationship of justice, loyalty, and responsibility between them.

In Islam, leadership is not a reward but a heavy trust (amanah). The Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) said:

“Every one of you is a shepherd and is responsible for his flock. The leader of people is a guardian and is responsible for his subjects.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari]

And the Qur’an tells those in power:

“Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due and when you judge between people to judge with justice.” [Qur’an, 4:58]

The Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) prayed that:

“…Whoever is given charge over my nation and he is harsh with them, be harsh with him. Whoever is given charge over my nation and he is gentle with them, be gentle with him.” [Sahih Muslim]

Respected brothers and sisters! True leaders listen to their people and lead by example, not privilege.

A nation cannot progress if its citizens are corrupt or careless, as Allah the Almighty says:

“Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves.” [Qur’an, 13:11]

Muslim believers must obey their leaders in good matters to keep social order and avoid chaos (See Qur’an, 4:59).

Citizens have the right and duty to advise their leaders with respect, honesty, and wisdom. The Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) said that religion is sincerity (Nasihah).

A successful society needs honest business practices, mutual respect, and efforts towards community-building.

During Umar Ibn al-Khattab’s (RA) rule, he walked the streets of Madinah at night disguised to check on his people. He heard a mother tell her daughter to mix water with milk to make more money. The daughter refused, saying that the Caliph (Umar) had forbidden it. The mother argued that nobody could see them in the dark. The daughter replied, “If Umar cannot see us, the Lord of Umar (Allah) sees us!” Caliph Umar (RA) heard this and did not punish them; instead, he rewarded the honest girl for her faith.

My beloved people! This story shows what a progressive nation looks like: a fair leader and a citizen with integrity. When both do their duties for the sake of Allah, the whole nation grows and moves forward.

A nation’s real progress depends on the balance of good leadership and responsible citizens. True success requires justice from those in power and sincere commitment from the people.

In Islam, authority is a heavy duty, not a privilege. A nation cannot grow if its leaders are corrupt or selfish. The Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) warned that any leader who betrays or neglects his people will find the gates of Paradise closed to him. On the other hand, “the most beloved of people to Allah on the Day of Resurrection and the closest to Him will be the just leader.”

Wallahi, a nation’s success is a two-way street. Citizens cannot expect good leaders while ignoring their own responsibilities. The Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) taught that the best leaders are those who care for their people and whom the people love back.

When Abubakar (RA) was elected as the first Caliph, he set the standard for the citizen-leader relationship in his first speech. He said:

“If I do well, support me. If I go wrong, correct me. Obey me as long as I obey Allah and His Messenger. If I disobey Him, you owe me no obedience.”

This puts the duty of giving feedback and following morality on the citizens.

Dear servants of Allah! Remember that true leaders serve the people. If a leader turns away the poor or ignores the needy, Allah will close the gates of heaven to them.

A nation thrives when its citizens promote what is right and stop what is wrong (See Qur’an, 3:104).

Real progress in any nation is built on justice, responsibility, and righteousness. A nation cannot truly prosper without good leaders, as authority is a heavy trust requiring moral strength and deep care for the people.

There is a deep spiritual truth about governance and national progress. Ibn Abbas (RA) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) said:

“Whoever supports a transgressor, Allah puts him in power over him,” and he added: “When Allah is pleased with a nation, He gives them the best leaders. When Allah is displeased with a nation, He gives them the worst.”

Also, the great scholar Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim said that a leader's actions reflect the people's behavior. If the people act with honesty, their leaders will too. True progress begins with the moral and spiritual improvement of the people.

A leader's value is not in having power, but in serving the people well. The Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) said:

“A leader who, having control over the affairs of the Muslims, does not strive diligently for their betterment and does not serve them sincerely, will not enter Paradise with them.”

Therefore, true leaders act with compassion. The Qur’an says:

“And by the mercy of Allah, you dealt with them gently. And had you been severe and harsh-hearted, they would have broken away from about you…” [Qur’an, 3:159]

Leaders who understand their people, listen to their concerns, and make decisions together build unity and lasting growth.

Leadership is an amanah (a trust). Unlike worldly desires for fame or power, a righteous person approaches leadership with care and a strong sense of duty. The Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) warned his devoted companion Abu Zarr (RA) that on the Day of Judgment, leadership will be a reason for regret, except for the one who fulfills its duties fairly.

Caliph Umar Ibn Abdul-Aziz (RA) famously recognized this heavy burden when he said:

“By Allah, if a mule were to fall in Iraq, I would fear that Allah would ask me why I did not level the road for it.”

This shows that true progress happens when leaders take full responsibility for every person and situation under their care. National growth is not just about building infrastructure; it also needs a strong moral base and true faith. A nation’s strength depends on the spiritual and ethical integrity of its leaders and people. When a nation is led by honesty, trustworthiness, and devotion to Allah, it receives blessings, peace, unity, and lasting success. Real progress, social reform, and lasting success depend on good leadership.

The Qur’an and Sunnah stress that a nation cannot achieve true success without just, compassionate, and God-fearing leaders. Leadership requires accountability, both in this world and the Hereafter.

Whether leading a nation, a business, or a home, a leader must care for those under their guidance. True strength lies in justice, self-control, and serving the people's needs.

Islamic teachings remind us that leadership often reflects the people's character. When a society strays from moral values, its leadership reflects those flaws. Conversely, when a society commits to righteousness, Allah blesses them with fair and kind leaders. To change our leaders, we must first change ourselves.

Injustice and oppression quickly destroy a civilization. The Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) warned:

“Beware of injustice, for injustice shall be darkness on the Day of Judgment.” [Sahih Muslim]

Great scholars like Imam Ibn Taimiyyah (RA) noted that Allah will uphold a just state even if led by non-believers, but an unjust state will fail, even if led by Muslims.

On the Day of Judgment, when all earthly power fades, a just leader receives a great reward. The Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) said that a just leader is one of the seven types of people who will be sheltered under Allah’s throne. Moreover, he taught that:

“A day of just leadership is better than sixty years of worship.”

Dear brothers and sisters! I say again, a nation cannot achieve real progress without good leaders because leadership is an amanah (a trust) that sets the moral tone for everyone. When leaders prioritize justice and accountability, the whole society benefits, showing that a country's success relies on the character of its leaders. Leadership is not about privilege or personal comfort, but a heavy duty of service. True leadership is about serving the people, not ruling over them. A nation or organization can only progress when its leaders adopt a mindset of service, where ethics and a long-term vision replace ego and authority.

When Umar Ibn Abdul-Aziz (RA) became the Caliph, his first act showed accountability. He realized his family had gained wealth through wrong means before. Showing true moral courage, he asked his wife to return all jewelry and royal assets to the public treasury.

Good leaders protect the organization’s and the nation’s resources over their own comforts. True wealth lies in the trust of the people they lead.

In Islam, justice is a key pillar of society. The Qur’an states:

“And We made them leaders, guiding by Our command. And We inspired them to do good deeds…”

A nation cannot achieve true economic or social progress if its leaders are biased or influenced by personal feelings. Fair, just, and informed decisions build trust. When a leader is upright, the whole system follows suit. Imam al-Ghazali, the famous scholar, once advised leaders:

“If a king is honest, his officials will be honest, but if he is careless and seeks comfort, his officers will soon become lazy and corrupt.”

Culture flows from the top down. Whether leading a nation, a small team, or a large company, your integrity sets the standard for your followers. You are a leader in your own way.

Again, a nation cannot progress without good citizens. True societal advancement is based on individual morals, responsibility, and strong character. No amount of political strategy can replace a lack of integrity among the people.

In the noble Qur’an, Allah gives the ultimate guide for a successful society. In Surah Saba (Qur’an, 34:15), the idea of Baldah Tayyibah (a good, prosperous land) directly relates to the gratitude and righteousness of its people. Society reflects its citizens. When everyone in the community takes care of their responsibilities, everyone’s rights are naturally protected.

Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) taught that:

“The best of people are those who bring the most benefit to others.”

Being a good Muslim and a good citizen goes hand in hand. True faith (Iman) pushes us to be honest, trustworthy, and law-abiding. A nation thrives when its people:

1. Keep their promises: Trustworthiness holds a community together.

2. Are responsible for the moral climate, encouraging each other to do right and standing against harm.

3. Are kind to the weak.

The Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) said:

“A nation will not be blessed if the weak cannot take their rights without obstacles.”

Real change does not start by blaming leaders; it begins with self-improvement. Think of the story of the orchard: if a community spends all its time arguing about trees instead of watering and nurturing the soil, they will never have a single tree.

Our nation (Nigeria) is our shared orchard. We must cultivate it through personal excellence, hard work, honesty, and civic involvement. One dishonest deal, one act of corruption, or one moment of neglect harms the whole nation. In contrast, every honest effort, every kind act, and every civic duty strengthens the community.

We are known as the best nation brought forth for mankind, but only when we promote what is right, prevent what is wrong, and believe in Allah. Let us promise to be the good citizens our society needs.

Civic duty is an act of Ibadah (worship). The Qur’an teaches that a society’s state reflects its people's character, showing that true prosperity needs individuals who are accountable, just, and grounded in their daily actions.

A nation's success rests on the shared morality of its people. The foundation of a strong society is rooted in each individual's commitment to justice, ethical behavior, and mutual support.

True patriotism and citizenship are shown not just in words, but through real contributions to the community’s well-being.

Everyone is a trustee (khalifah) on earth. Progress starts when citizens recognize this duty and work to improve their surroundings, making them cleaner and kinder to the vulnerable.

The Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) also said:

“None of you truly believes until he wishes for his brother what he wishes for himself.”

When this level of care becomes the norm, progress naturally follows.

People often measure progress by wealth or infrastructure, but Islamic teachings remind us that moral and ethical values are the foundation of a thriving society.

The Quran says:

“You are the best nation produced as an example for mankind. You promote what is right and prevent what is wrong…” [Qur’an, 3:110]

This means that every good citizen acts as a guardian of societal morals, fighting against corruption and injustice while promoting honesty and civic duty.

Allah commands:

“Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due…” [Qur’an, 4:59]

Whether you are a boss, an employee, a leader, or a neighbor, fulfilling your duties with integrity is the mark of a good citizen.

When you create a society of individuals who practice honesty in business, help the poor, show kindness, and respect the law, you build a civilization that cannot fail. Real change starts from within us all.

Finally, I pray: Ya Allah, grant our leaders wisdom, justice, and kindness. Guide their hearts to fear You and love the people they serve. Bless them with clarity to lead with honesty. Protect them from greed, selfishness, and bad advisers. Let them be leaders who bring peace, unity, and progress to our nation. O Lord, let them govern with truth and uplift the poor and the weak.

Ya Allah! We ask for leaders who seek the well-being of every person, not their own power. May they have the foresight to build a future for generations they will never meet. Let them reflect Your light.

Ya Allah, grant us better leaders in the 2027 elections. Ya Allah, improve our leaders, place the best among us in charge, and keep the worst away from us.
