The African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate in Gombe State, Bala Tinka, gave free fuel to commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators. This was part of events for Nigeria’s Independence Day.

The one-day event took place from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday at selected filling stations in Gombe metropolis.

Mr Tinka shared the news during an interview with a local radio station in Gombe that our correspondent listened to.

He said this gesture aimed to help transport operators who are struggling with the rising cost of petrol.

"On October 1st, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., any Okada rider and Keke Napep operator should go to our designated filling stations and collect fuel free of charge," Mr Tinka said.

He described the initiative as a small way to join Nigerians in celebrating Independence Day while helping those facing high transportation and fuel costs.

Mr Tinka also mentioned that this initiative could be part of a wider relief program if he wins the election.

Aside from the fuel giveaway, Mr Tinka discussed his plans in healthcare, agriculture, local contracting, and water supply.

He promised free healthcare for children under five years and elderly people aged 70 and above. He said no one should suffer from high medical bills.

"We will provide free healthcare for our children under the age of five and for our elderly parents. No child should die because the parents cannot afford hospital bills, and no old person should be left to die," he said.

On agriculture, Mr Tinka said a future ADC government would change how fertilizer is bought and shared. He wants to focus on local wholesalers and agro-dealers.

He believes buying agricultural inputs from local businesses will keep more money in Gombe and help the economy.

"If we buy from local wholesalers, the money will stay in Gombe, it will circulate among our people and boost our local economy. That is how to grow Gombe," he said.

The businessman also promised to give qualified local contractors more chances to work on government projects.

He noted that contracts needing special skills not found in Gombe could still go to outsiders, but local professionals will be preferred when they can do the job.

"We have competent engineers, builders and contractors in Gombe. We will patronise them to help our local experts grow. We will only go outside when it is absolutely necessary," he said.

On the ongoing water shortages in parts of Gombe metropolis and other areas, Mr Tinka said his government would look for a lasting solution instead of temporary fixes.

He suggested a full assessment of the water crisis before taking action to solve the problem.

"Water is life, but our people have suffered for too long without water. We will not do temporary fixes. We will identify the root cause and bring an end to this perennial water scarcity in Gombe," he said.

Mr Tinka became the ADC governorship candidate for the 2027 election after the party’s primary in May 2026.

He then urged Gombe residents to support the ADC, promising an inclusive government that focuses on improving citizens' lives if elected.
