Suspected armed herders attacked the convoy of the Divisional Police Officer of Ayilamo on Monday in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State. Two police officers lost their lives in the attack.
Sources from the community shared details with PUNCH Online on Tuesday. They said the DPO was coming back to Ayilamo after an official trip to Makurdi when the armed herders struck.
"At about 6:00 PM on Monday, some individuals identified as newly deployed Mobile Police officers to Ayilamo community were attacked and killed.
"The incident happened while the officers were going to escort the DPO, who was returning from Makurdi to Ayilamo," one source, who asked to remain anonymous, said.
This is not the first time Ayilamo community has faced violence. Last Thursday, armed herders attacked the area, killing four police officers and seven residents.
DSP Peter Aondongu, the spokesperson for the state police command, confirmed the latest incident. He said the attackers killed two officers in the DPO’s escort.
The PPRO said, "The DPO came to Makurdi to carry some things and while going back to Ayilamo, he was attacked and lost two of his men in the attack."
