Gunmen attacked Rumuodogo 2 Community in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State on Monday morning, killing two people.
The reason for the attack is still unclear. The assailants stormed homes like soldiers looking for specific targets.
A woman named Monica, who said her husband was one of the victims, claimed the attackers came from a nearby community in another local government area next to Rumuodogo 2.
Monica explained that the attackers broke into their home around 1AM on Monday. They smashed their door and dragged her and her husband outside.
She said the assailants beat her husband and then shot him. "They came by 1 a.m., broke our door and brought my husband and me outside. I was even naked when we were brought outside. They started beating my husband and shot him.
"They wanted to kill me too, but one of them said they should leave me because I am a woman," she recalled, tears in her eyes.
Monica added, "They said our community was responsible for the killing of the persons whose dead bodies were discovered in the river last Monday."
The attack shocked the community and created fear. Many residents ran for safety, hiding in the bushes.
When reached for comment, Blessing Agabe, the spokesperson for the State Police Command and an Assistant Superintendent of Police, confirmed the incident.
She said, "I can confirm the incident. Two persons were killed in the attack. Investigation is ongoing to ascertain the motive behind the attack and to arrest the perpetrators."
