Gunmen attacked on Sunday night and killed a former councillor from Rim Ward in the Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State. The victim, Daniel Danjuma Chong, was popularly known as ‘Hon. Star.’ This is another violent incident in the community.
According to PUNCH Metro, the attack happened around 11:45 PM in Torok Village, Rim Community.
Cynitha Dung, a resident, spoke to PUNCH Metro in Jos on Monday about the incident. She said the shooting caused panic in the community. Residents ran for safety when they heard the loud gunfire.
"We heard heavy gunshots late in the night. Everyone ran for safety. By the time people came out, Hon. Daniel had been shot. It was a terrifying experience, and the community is still in shock," she said.
Cynitha also mentioned that another local, Mr. David Danjuma, was shot and is now getting medical care.
The Berom Youth Moulders Association reacted strongly to the killing. They condemned the act and urged security agencies to find those responsible.
In a statement from their National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong, the association called the attack a disturbing crime against innocent people in Riyom Local Government Area. They noted that the attackers came at night and fired shots, killing the former councillor before escaping.
The group offered their condolences to the deceased's family and the people of Torok Community. "We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and the people of Torok Community, and we wish David Dachollom Danjuma a speedy recovery," the statement said.
The BYM asked security agencies and the Plateau State Government to start a quick search for the attackers. They also called for better security in vulnerable communities.
"We call on security agencies and the Plateau State Government to immediately go after the perpetrators of this attack and ensure they are arrested and brought to justice," the association added.
The group also urged the authorities to break up criminal hideouts in the area. They repeated their call to ban open grazing, saying criminals misuse it.
"The continuous killing of innocent citizens is unacceptable. Those responsible must face justice," the statement continued.
As of now, attempts to reach the Plateau State Police Command’s spokesman, SP Alfred Alabo, for confirmation were not successful.
