Gunmen kill three community protectors in Plateau attack

Three community protectors were killed when gunmen attacked NTV community in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State on Tuesday night.

The victims were on night duty, guarding the community from criminals, when the attackers opened fire on them.

A local resident, Niret John, confirmed the incident to The PUNCH in Jos on Wednesday. She said the attack happened around 11pm.

According to her, the gunmen shot at the vigilantes while they were on watch for the community.

The attack has raised fears in the area as residents deal with increased insecurity.

Another resident, Gabriel Ayuba, said the victims were killed while on duty. He stated, “The incident happened around 11pm. The men were watching over the community when the gunmen shot at them.

“It is very sad that people who were only protecting the community were attacked and killed.”

Rwang Tengwong, the spokesman for the Berom Youth Moulders, also confirmed the attack. He said three people were killed in the incident.

Tengwong described what happened as unfortunate. He urged security agencies to increase patrols and take steps to protect communities.

He condemned the killing of volunteers who risk their lives for their communities. He said, “The people cannot continue to live in fear while those volunteering to protect their communities are being killed.”

Tengwong called for a full investigation to find those responsible and bring them to justice. He said, “I urge security operatives to thoroughly investigate the attack, identify those responsible and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.

“I also appeal to residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements to security agencies. The safety of lives and property must remain a collective responsibility.”

Attempts to reach Alabo Alfred, the spokesman for the Plateau State Police Command, for comments on the attack were unsuccessful. His phone was switched off at the time of reporting.
