Nigeria Football Federation President, Ibrahim Gusau, has stepped down from his position. He made the announcement during a press conference in Abuja on Thursday.
As reported by the Super Eagles news account on X (@SSE_NGA), Gusau was not alone. Board members of the Executive Committee also resigned with him.
This crisis came after the Super Falcons failed to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. This is the first time in Nigeria’s history that the team has not made it to the tournament. They lost 2-1 to South Africa in the play-off.
Before this, the Falcons were knocked out of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in the quarter-finals by Cameroon. The Super Eagles also missed out on qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.
The NFF has been under fire for how it managed a ₦17bn Federal Government intervention fund released in 2024. There is also a report from a fact-finding committee claiming that board members and officials influenced national team selections for personal financial gain.
Gusau’s resignation comes just before the NFF’s elective congress. This congress is set for September 27 in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
