Today, you can complete the whole trade cycle using technology. This includes mobile trading, real-time data, execution algorithms, and AI analysis. It sounds impressive. But when you look closely, the part that executes trades is much more advanced than the part that makes decisions.

What Is AI Doing in Trading?

AI is speeding up how traders make decisions based on market data. A recent survey by the Bank of England and FCA found that 75% of financial companies in the UK used AI in 2024. This is an increase from 58% in 2022. Among those using AI, 55% had some level of automated decision-making. Only 2% of cases were decided without human involvement.

Traders are noticing a trend. According to J.P. Morgan’s 2026 e-Trading Survey, generative AI has been the most important technology in trading for three years now. Models can analyze data quickly, but humans still need to sign off on trades.

How Much Trading Has Become Electronic?

The same survey showed that traders think electronic channels will handle 60% of trades in 2026 and 70% in 2027. But just because trading is electronic does not mean it is automatic. The MiFID II rules in the EU define 'algorithmic trading' as situations where computers set order details with little or no human input.

In retail trading, automation often starts with Expert Advisors on MetaTrader. Traders generally fall into two groups: those who want automation without coding and those who want to code their own solutions. Pepperstone offers services for the latter through cTrader robots, API services, backtesting, and VPS. Interactive Brokers and Saxo provide these options with documented APIs and FIX connectivity.

What Has Mobile Trading Changed?

Mobile trading has changed both where and how quickly trading happens. In Plus500’s 2025 report, 89% of their OTC income came from mobile and tablet apps. The FCA's 2024 study found that around 48% of mobile trading app users were under 35 years old.

But there are concerns about mobile trading. A paper from NBER used data from two German banks and found that trades made on mobile phones often involved buying risky assets and chasing quick returns. Just because it’s easy to trade doesn’t mean it’s a good idea.
