Filip Hrgovic has made a bold statement about Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury. He believes both British heavyweights are close to finishing their boxing careers. Hrgovic is also confident that Moses Itauma will become the undisputed champion.
The Croatian heavyweight thinks Joshua might have only one fight left after his much-anticipated match with Fury in December. Hrgovic also thinks Fury is nearing retirement, even though he is one of the biggest names in boxing.
Joshua and Fury are set to face off in a much-talked-about Battle of Britain later this year. Fans are excited about their fight. But Hrgovic is not sure if either fighter has much left to give in the ring.
“[Anthony] Joshua is a great champion but I think he’s done as well. Maybe he will have one more fight,” Hrgovic told DAZN.
Hrgovic feels the same about Fury, acknowledging his achievements but questioning how much longer he will last. “[Tyson Fury] is also a living legend but he’s done. He’ll maybe have one more fight,” he added.
“I hope he will continue after the [Anthony] Joshua fight. He is a big star and we need him. But I think he is near the end.”
Neither Joshua, a two-time unified heavyweight champion, nor Fury has said they are retiring. Fans are eagerly waiting to see what happens in December.
Hrgovic shared his thoughts during an interview with DAZN at the O2 Arena on Saturday. This event was where Daniel Dubois kept his heavyweight world title. Hrgovic did not stop at Joshua and Fury; he also had some sharp words for other top fighters.
He suggested Fabio Wardley should think about retiring after his knockout loss to Dubois. He questioned Efe Ajagba’s boxing skills and argued that Murat Gassiev is too small for the heavyweight division.
Despite his criticisms, Hrgovic praised Dubois. He noted the champion’s strong jab but expressed concerns about his speed.
Hrgovic is particularly excited about Itauma. He believes the young British-Nigerian heavyweight has the potential to dominate the division and unify all the major world titles.
Hrgovic, who has fought Itauma before, thinks how the young boxer responds mentally to setbacks will be key to reaching his full potential. “[Itauma] is the future. This guy will be undisputed in a few years. No one will ever beat him if he comes back mentally,” he said.
Looking ahead, Hrgovic might face mandatory challenger Frank Sanchez. There are talks of a possible fight in Croatia.
His strong views on the heavyweight scene add more excitement to the upcoming Joshua-Fury match, while his support for Itauma highlights the rising expectations for the young prospect.
