The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has welcomed the 400m Hurdles Commonwealth Games champion, Ezekiel Nathaniel, a corporal, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
During the reception, the IGP said the victory shows how long the Nigeria Police Force has been involved in sports.
The police chief explained that Nathaniel’s success is proof of what police officers can achieve when they get the right support to excel in their jobs and sports.
He said: “The Nigeria Police Force and sports have always been twins, bound together by shared values of discipline, teamwork and excellence.
“This victory is a powerful reminder of that bond, and of what our personnel can achieve when given the platform and support to thrive both in service and in competition.”
The IGP promised police athletes and officers with sporting talent that the Force will keep supporting police sports. He said they will work to identify, nurture, and celebrate talent among their ranks.
“I want Corporal Ezekiel Nathaniel, and every officer watching, to know that this Force will continue to invest in and support police sports.
“We will keep identifying, nurturing and celebrating talent within our ranks, because a Force that is strong in body and spirit is a Force that serves the nation better.”
Mr Disu, who said he is a sportsman, expressed pride in Nathaniel’s achievement.
He added that this success has brought honour to Nathaniel, the Nigeria Police Force, and the country.
He said: “As a sportsman myself, I take particular pride in this achievement. Corporal Ezekiel Nathaniel, you have honoured your uniform, your Force and your country. Congratulations, and may this be the first of many more victories to come.”
