Al-Ittihad striker George Ilenikhena has reportedly decided to play for Nigeria after speaking with Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.

Multiple sources say the 19-year-old has agreed to represent Nigeria after Chelle shared his plans for the talented forward, whom he has been watching for nearly a year.

Ilenikhena missed the Super Eagles squad during the March international window because he was considering playing for France.

While the striker based in Saudi Arabia was not rushing to make a choice about his international future, reports indicate he might start with Nigeria’s U-23 team before moving up to the senior team.

Born in Lagos and moving to France as a child, Ilenikhena can represent both countries. He has never played for France in any official match, so he won't need to change his nationality to play for Nigeria.

The forward began his career with Belgian club Royal Antwerp before joining AS Monaco in France. He moved to Saudi Pro League champions Al-Ittihad earlier this year.

His reported decision is a big win for Chelle, who is building a squad for the U-23 team ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and also looking to strengthen his attack for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Victor Osimhen is still Nigeria’s top striker when he is fit, and Victor Boniface is also in the mix for a spot in the attack. If Ilenikhena commits to Nigeria, he would add another exciting young talent to the Super Eagles.

Earlier this year, while still with Monaco, Ilenikhena made UEFA Champions League history by becoming the youngest African player to reach 15 appearances in the tournament. He broke the previous record held by former Nigeria captain Nwankwo Kanu.

He achieved this milestone at the age of 19 years and 157 days during his 18-minute run in Monaco’s 6-1 loss to Real Madrid.
