London Mayor Wants Joshua vs Fury Fight in Wembley

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has made a public request for the big boxing match between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury to take place in the city. He is asking promoters to bring the fight to Wembley Stadium, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.

Khan said, "A message to the promoters, we want to host it in London. Talk to us, we’re really keen to have it," while speaking to BBC Sport.

As a big boxing fan, the mayor highlighted London's history of hosting major heavyweight events at Wembley. This includes past fights with both Joshua and Fury that attracted huge crowds.

He added, "I understand the temptation of going to Madison Square Garden, of the money on offer, but the fans are here. We’ve been loyal to Tyson and Anthony. We love them both, and we’d love to see them box here in London."

Khan's call comes during a time of uncertainty over where the match will be held. Saudi organizers Sela and the broadcaster Netflix are believed to prefer New York's Madison Square Garden for the fight, which is set for November. They mentioned better time zones and global viewing figures as reasons for their choice. Joshua's team insists that his contract says the fight should be in the UK. Promoter Eddie Hearn is still pushing for the event to stay in the country.

But Fury has confirmed that the fight will actually take place at Madison Square Garden. This announcement has cleared up months of confusion about the venue. The former world heavyweight champion shared the news on Instagram, posting a picture of himself and Joshua with the New York City skyline in the background. No date was mentioned in the post.

Fury wrote, "What a place NYC, and what a venue MSG, and what a fight Fury vs AJ, the land of opportunity."

The fight is expected to happen in November, with November 20 being the target date. This comes after both fighters signed contracts with Turki Alalshikh, who is the chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority. Hearn stated that Joshua's team does not want the fight to happen outside the UK but recognizes the need for a solution that works for everyone involved.

Hearn said, "We don’t want to do the fight in the US, but we also understand it has to work for everybody. We’ve set out our position, mainly in concern to the tax situation that will deplete his net purse by going to America, which can be rectified and I think they’re happy to do that."

Fury, who is 38 years old, has won 36 of his professional fights. His only losses came in two matches against Ukraine’s Oleksandr Usyk in 2024. He returned to the ring in July, winning against Polish fighter Mariusz Wach in a match in Pattaya, Thailand. Joshua also won his last fight on July 25 against Kristian Prenga in Jeddah.
