Super Eagles striker George Ilenikhena is happy after helping Al-Ittihad end their losing streak with a 4-1 win over Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League. He said the team reacted well to their recent losses, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
Ilenikhena played a big part in the victory on Tuesday. He scored a goal and provided an assist, earning him the Man of the Match award. This win was crucial for Al-Ittihad after two straight defeats.
“It is very important for us to win this game after losing two games. It is very important to react, and we reacted in the best way, so we are very happy,” Ilenikhena told the Saudi press.
The Nigerian forward missed Al-Ittihad’s 3-2 loss to Al-Hilal in the Saudi El Clasico on October 10 due to fitness issues. He came back from a minor injury but could not help the team in their following 2-1 defeat to Shabab Al-Ahli.
Against Al-Ettifaq, Ilenikhena played for 73 minutes before he was substituted for Youssef En-Nesyri. En-Nesyri scored two goals late in the match to secure the win for Al-Ittihad.
After the match, Ilenikhena said that every player has a role to help the team succeed, no matter their position.
“The coach changed. Everybody will help the team in the best way he can. It is what we did today that we won,” he added.
Ilenikhena's performance added to his impressive form. He has scored or assisted in each of his last four appearances in the Saudi Pro League.
