Rangers striker Godwin Obaje shares his thoughts on becoming only the third player to score 100 NPFL goals. He discusses the turning point in his career, his dreams of playing for Nigeria, and more in this chat with PETER AKINBO.
When you started your professional career, did you ever think you would score 100 goals in the NPFL?
Before I began my professional journey in the NPFL, I never thought about scoring 100 goals. I just focused on working hard and scoring as many goals as I could. That was my goal; I did my best, and now I feel proud to have achieved this.
Before the Warri Wolves game, did you know you were one goal away from 100 NPFL goals? What went through your mind when you took the penalty?
Yes, before the Warri Wolves match, I knew I was just one goal away from hitting the 100-goal mark. When I stepped up to take the penalty, I thought this was my chance to make history. I told myself to take my time and ensure I made history that day. Thank God I scored, and we got the three points in that game.
When did you realize you had reached the 100-goal mark, and how did it feel when it sunk in?
I first noticed I was close to 100 goals last season, towards the end. At first, I didn’t know, but when I saw the stats showing how many goals were left, it motivated me a lot. I decided I would try to reach that mark, but my main goal was to help Rangers win the league. So, hitting 100 goals was not my main focus; winning the league was. I think it really sank in when I held the plaque in the next game after reaching it. I feel very happy to have achieved this. It is something I have worked hard for.
You have played for several NPFL clubs over the years. Which part of your career do you think was the most important on your way to 100 goals?
I have played for many clubs in the NPFL, and I believe my biggest turning point was winning my first league title with Rangers. I had already won the top scorer award in the league, so my main goal was to win the league. I thank God I was able to achieve it with Rangers International Football Club.
What challenges have you faced in keeping your level up and scoring consistently in the NPFL?
The biggest challenge for me was staying consistent as a striker. I think my ability to face challenges helped me. I am someone who stays motivated no matter what. I believe I can overcome anything with God by my side, so I never give up. That is just who I am, and I believe I can score at any time.
You are now only the third player to reach 100 NPFL goals after Victor Ezeji and Rabiu Ali. What does it mean to have your name alongside theirs?
I am really happy to be mentioned with these names in Nigerian football who have reached 100 goals. I am glad to be part of the history of Nigerian football among these legends. It is a memory and an achievement I will always cherish.
Is there a specific goal among your 100 NPFL goals that you remember the most? What makes it special?
All the goals I have scored are special because scoring in the NPFL is not easy. It really is tough, especially as a striker and the main man in your team. So, every goal I score is memorable to me.
Now that you have reached 100 goals, what is your next target? Is there a specific number you want to reach?
After reaching 100 goals, I do not want to set a specific target. I just want to keep scoring as much as I can. Let’s see how it goes and how far I can reach.
You have played for Nigeria at CHAN level before. How much does the desire to play for the national team mean to you?
Every player dreams of representing their country at international tournaments, so I am always ready to represent Nigeria whenever I am called. That will never be a problem for me. I am always set to play for my country, whether with the Super Eagles or the CHAN squad.
Looking back at your journey from your early days in the NPFL to becoming a 100-goal striker, what has kept you going?
What has kept me in the NPFL for so long is my attitude, discipline, and being God-fearing. Discipline is key, along with hard work. Honestly, I work very hard to score all the goals I have scored. It is not just me; it is God by my side and my attitude that has helped me.
How did you begin your football career? Did you have support from your family?
I started my football career at Moderate Stars Academy, which my elder brother owns. My family has supported me a lot. My brothers, Gabriel and Joshua, have always been there for me. When I began playing, Joshua would buy me boots to motivate me. From the start of my career, I had full family support, and I am truly grateful to them.
