The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has given political parties extra time to submit their candidate lists for next year's presidential and National Assembly elections.
In a statement from its spokesperson, Mohammed Harun, INEC announced that the new deadline is now Tuesday, 14 July, at midnight. This is an extension from the original date of Saturday, 11 July.
Mr Harun explained that the decision to extend the deadline came after the Inter-Party Advisory Council made a request. They asked for more time on behalf of political parties that could not upload the names and details of their candidates on time.
He mentioned that INEC is dedicated to being inclusive while following the rules set by the Electoral Act. He urged the political parties to use this extra time wisely.
Mr Harun emphasized that all necessary details should be uploaded before the new deadline passes. This way, parties can ensure their candidates are properly registered for the upcoming elections.
