The Independent National Electoral Commission has given out Certificates of Return to those who won the bye-elections held on June 20, 2026, in Rivers, Enugu, Nasarawa, Ondo and Kano states.
The certificates were handed over by Mrs May Agbamuche-Mbu, the Supervising National Commissioner for Rivers State, on behalf of the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN.
A statement on INEC’s X handle on Tuesday announced this.
Agbamuche-Mbu congratulated the winners in her speech. She urged them to serve their people well, saying their main job is to effectively represent the people.
"The most important responsibility is to represent the people well," she said.
She also mentioned that Certificates of Return would soon be given to winners in Kebbi State for the Zuru State Constituency election and in Ekiti State for the governorship election.
Reports from PUNCH Online say the All Progressives Congress had a strong performance in the by-elections on Saturday. They won in Ondo, Nasarawa, Kano and Kebbi states. Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party kept the Rivers South-East Senatorial District seat.
The results, which INEC announced on Sunday, increased the APC’s presence in the legislature across Nigeria. But some elections faced issues like claims of electoral fraud, violence and voter intimidation.
Ikeje Asogwa from the APC won the Enugu North Senatorial District by-election.
INEC also named Rabiu Garba Aiki of the APC as the winner of the Zuru State Constituency by-election for the Kebbi State House of Assembly.
Rabiu Shuaibu from the APC was declared the winner of the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency by-election in Kano State.
Olaka Nwogu, the candidate from the PDP, was announced as the winner of the Rivers South-East Senatorial District by-election.
Dayo Faduyile of the APC emerged victorious in the Ondo South Senatorial District by-election.
In the Nasarawa North Senatorial by-election, APC candidate Danladi Envulu-anza won after receiving 45,362 votes.
In Ekiti State, Governor Biodun Oyebanji was re-elected. This makes him the first governor to win back-to-back elections in the state since 1999.
