List of Countries Supporting or Opposing Infantino for FIFA Election

FIFA president Gianni Infantino is facing more opposition as the March 2027 election nears. Several European football associations have pulled their support after the controversy around his FIFA Forward Enterprise investment plan.

Infantino’s re-election seemed secure until this plan, which invited private companies to invest in the World Cup, drew criticism from football bodies.

FIFA later dropped the proposal, and Infantino apologized for the mistakes related to the initiative.

He has since gained support from FIFA’s senior executives in a crisis meeting held in Rabat, Morocco.

Still, the final decision rests with FIFA’s 211 member associations. Each association has one vote. This means smaller countries like San Marino and the Bahamas have the same voting power as bigger football nations like Brazil and England.

Confederations such as UEFA and the Confederation of African Football can support candidates and lobby their members. But individual associations are the ones who actually vote.

While UEFA has openly criticized Infantino, the African football confederation is backing him. So far, no candidate has officially declared an intention to challenge him. The deadline for nominations is November 18.

Countries Opposing Infantino

Most opposition to Infantino is coming from Europe. Finland was one of the first to withdraw its support, followed by England, Wales, and Serbia. Sweden, Greece, Albania, Croatia, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway have also said they will not support Infantino’s re-election, according to PUNCH Online and ITV on Saturday.

Romania and the Czech Republic have hinted they might not support Infantino, though neither has formally announced their position yet.

Jordan is the only non-European country that has publicly declared it will not support Infantino. Its football federation is led by former FIFA vice-president Prince Ali bin Al Hussein, who said FIFA’s leadership is blackmailing them.

He mentioned that Jordan was waiting for money after reaching the final of the FIFA Arab Cup in Qatar in December. He claimed that they were told supporting Infantino would help them get the funds.

Prince Ali later confirmed that Jordan had received the money.

Countries Backing Infantino

Infantino still has support from several associations in different confederations. Qatar, Sri Lanka, Kuwait, Lebanon, and Morocco publicly backed him after the FIFA Forward Enterprise plan was withdrawn.

They were followed by endorsements from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Indonesia, Bhutan, the Philippines, Mexico, Argentina, and Paraguay.

Other associations like Egypt, Niger, and Mauritania, which have supported Infantino in the past, have shown support again recently but haven’t given full endorsements.
