The International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria will look into the growing threat that artificial intelligence (AI) poses to trust in the media. They will also explore how newsrooms can use AI tools to spot and fight misinformation. This will happen at their 2026 conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM).

A statement from the organisation’s Deputy President, Fidelis Mbah, and Secretary, Ahmed Shekarau, shared details about the two-day conference. The theme is "Truth Under Pressure: Journalism, AI and Information Integrity." It will take place on December 2 and 3, 2026, at the Bolton White Hotel in Wuse Zone 7, Abuja.

The conference will look into the challenges facing the Nigerian media. It will focus on how AI affects journalism, information integrity, false information, freedom of the press, and the safety of journalists.

The event will also be a space for discussing important national and industry topics. The goal is to promote free, independent, and responsible journalism.

One key aspect of the gathering will be to improve collaboration between the media and security agencies. Policymakers, experts, media leaders, journalists, and advocates for media freedom are expected to attend.

Participants will look into how AI-generated deepfakes and other synthetic media threaten the public's trust in journalism. This is especially important as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections.

IPI Nigeria President Musikilu Mojeed said the conference will also discuss how journalists can use AI tools and clear verification methods. This will help them ensure the accuracy and trustworthiness of their reports.

Mr Mojeed mentioned that the conference will also evaluate media freedom and journalist safety in Nigeria. They will talk about the policy and legal changes needed to support independent journalism. The aim is to engage with the government on issues of transparency and accountability.

The gathering will promote the sharing of best practices and different global viewpoints on protecting press freedom and encouraging responsible journalism.

Another part of the conference will involve welcoming new members into IPI Nigeria. This will grow the organisation’s network and strengthen its focus on defending press freedom and promoting responsible journalism in Nigeria.

The second day, December 3, will be reserved for the Annual General Meeting, which is only for IPI Nigeria members. The AGM will allow members to discuss reports from the Executive Committee, review the organisation’s work and strategic direction, and consider new initiatives and partnerships to enhance press freedom and journalist safety in Nigeria.

Founded in 1950, IPI is a worldwide network of editors, media leaders, and top journalists from over 100 countries. For more than seventy years, the organisation has fought for and defended press freedom and independent journalism globally.
