Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi scored a deflected goal in the first half to help Fulham finally win a Premier League match. This win eases the pressure on head coach Álvaro Arbeloa, who has been under scrutiny.
Iwobi curled a low shot from outside the box in the 33rd minute. The shot hit Lucas Herrington and went under Hull City goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis during the match on Saturday.
This goal secured three points for Fulham and moved them off the bottom of the table. The team had not won in their first six league games under Arbeloa, who took over after Marco Silva in July.
Despite some good performances, Fulham had not been able to get results until now. This time, they got the win they needed.
Arbeloa called the result “massive.” He said, “It’s a massive game for us,” in an interview with BBC Match of the Day.
He also looked ahead to a busy week, with a tough match against Coventry next Saturday, followed by an EFL Cup game against Crystal Palace. He described it as “a massive week.”
“It won’t be easy, but we know how we need to play and compete. We have to be competitive in this league. We have our way and hope we can win many games,” he added.
The goal came during the 100th meeting between Fulham and Hull. Hull City failed to clear the ball twice. Sander Berge slid the ball to Iwobi, who made no mistake with the finish. Tzolakis will feel he should have done better.
Fulham controlled much of the match, creating many chances. They kept Hull from getting any significant opportunities. The closest Hull came to scoring was when Mohamed Belloumi misfired in the second half.
Later, Gonzalo García hit the crossbar with a header as Fulham looked for a second goal. The only negative moment came late in stoppage time when substitute Ryan Sessegnon got a straight red card for a rough challenge on Robinio Vaz.
Arbeloa praised his players’ hard work. He said, “We were having the same feeling as other matches, when we were controlling the game for long spells and having good chances but didn’t score.”
He added, “Our rivals punish our mistakes or take their chances, but we were brilliant for 90 minutes. We controlled the game, had many chances and didn’t concede any clear chances to Hull. We have been working so hard and deserved this.”
