The Jigawa State House of Assembly has suspended the Speaker of Auyo Legislative Council, Haruna Maigari. This action is due to alleged anti-party activities that some officials say threaten the unity of the All Progressives Congress at the grassroots level.

This decision was made during a plenary session on Tuesday at the Assembly complex in Dutse, the state capital. This comes as the party is dealing with the effects of recent primaries.

Our correspondent from The PUNCH learned that this suspension is part of a wave of disciplinary actions across Jigawa APC after the recent primary elections.

Several special advisers and assistants have already faced suspensions statewide due to alleged anti-party actions from the state level down to local government.

Maigari, who also serves as the councillor for Auyo Ward, was suspended after the House discussed a motion put forward by the Majority Leader, Lawan Dansure.

The motion called for disciplinary measures against Maigari for actions seen as harmful to the party's unity. Dansure urged Assembly members to support the suspension during the plenary session on Tuesday.

He stated that the House must protect the integrity of the ruling party as it prepares for the 2027 elections. Dansure said the actions of the Speaker of Auyo Legislative Council hurt the unity, stability, and progress of the All Progressives Congress in the state.

“His actions are detrimental to the unity, stability, and progress of the All Progressives Congress,” Dansure told the House. He added that anti-party conduct at the grassroots level could weaken APC’s chances in future elections.

After the motion passed, Speaker of the Jigawa State House of Assembly, Haruna Dangyatin, announced Maigari's suspension effective immediately.

He said the House cannot ignore issues that test party discipline. “Hon. Haruna Maigari is hereby suspended as Speaker of Auyo Legislative Council over alleged anti-party activities,” Dangyatin declared during the session.

The Speaker also mentioned that the House remains dedicated to maintaining party discipline across all levels of governance in the state. Dangyatin formed an investigative committee to look into the matter and report back in two weeks.

“The committee is expected to establish facts and recommend further action based on its findings,” he stated.

The Speaker instructed the suspended lawmaker to hand over all official documents he has to the Deputy Speaker of Auyo Legislative Council. This handover must happen immediately to ensure council business continues smoothly.

Meanwhile, the House received a formal notice from Governor Umar Namadi about an official trip.

“The governor is scheduled to attend a two-day West African Rice Investment Roundtable in Accra, Ghana,” the Speaker said during the plenary session.

Dangyatin explained that the governor's trip will take place between June 2 and June 3, 2026. He added that “the governor’s participation is aimed at attracting investment to Jigawa’s rice value chain.”
