The wave of defections in the House of Representatives picked up speed on Thursday. Four lawmakers from Bauchi State left the Peoples Democratic Party for the Allied Peoples Movement. This change shows shifting political alliances as we move closer to the 2027 general election.

The defections were officially announced during the plenary session. Speaker Tajudeen Abbas read letters from the lawmakers, informing the House of their decision to leave the PDP.

The lawmakers are Muhammad Shehu from Zaki Federal Constituency, Aliyu Garu from Bauchi Federal Constituency, Sani Tanko from Shira/Giade Federal Constituency, and Mansur Soro from Darazo/Ganjuwa Federal Constituency.

In their letters, they mentioned “internal party squabbles” and the “need to provide effective representation” to their constituents as reasons for their departure.

These defections highlight the changing political landscape within the National Assembly. Lawmakers are adjusting their positions ahead of future elections.

The move by the four Bauchi lawmakers is important because of the PDP’s strong presence in the state. It comes at a time when there is increased political activity regarding the state’s power dynamics.

This development follows a series of defections in the House over the past week. The growing movement across party lines has led to speculation about new political coalitions and alliances as the next election cycle approaches.

Party defections are common in Nigeria’s politics, but the recent surge has caught attention due to its timing and scale. Political watchers say many lawmakers are rethinking their political paths amid internal issues in some parties, leadership conflicts, and the efforts of smaller parties to grow their influence.

The defections also happen as opposition parties face their own internal problems. Smaller parties are trying to strengthen their numbers by bringing in serving lawmakers.

For the PDP, losing four lawmakers from the same state is another blow. The party is still trying to rebuild after the disputes that followed the 2023 general election.

On the other hand, the APM seems to be benefiting from these changes in the House. The party has gained a number of lawmakers in recent days.

With about a year left for legislative activities before the next election, people will be watching closely to see if the current wave of defections continues. They will also look at how this may change the political balance in the House of Representatives.
