The United States chapter of the All Progressives Congress has told Nigerians to keep believing in the country’s democracy. They say that despite tough economic and governance issues, democracy is still the best way to achieve national growth and stability.
In a statement released on Thursday for the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, APC-USA called June 12 a historic day that shows the sacrifices Nigerians made for democratic governance. They urged everyone to keep defending the country’s democratic values.
Prof. Tai Balofin, the chapter’s Chairman, signed the statement. He stated that even though Nigeria’s democracy has challenges, it is important to protect and strengthen it.
He pointed out that June 12 reminds us of the strength, bravery, and determination of Nigerians who fought against military rule. They laid the groundwork for the democratic freedoms we enjoy today.
"June 12 represents the resilience, courage and determination of Nigerians who fought for the entrenchment of democratic governance," Balofin said.
He encouraged Nigerians to stay involved in the democratic process by supporting institutions that promote accountability, transparency, and good governance.
The group also congratulated President Bola Tinubu on this occasion. They called him a key figure in Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement and praised his efforts to implement reforms to improve the country.
While recognizing the economic struggles many Nigerians face, APC-USA asked for patience and support for the government’s current policies. They believe meaningful reforms often need tough decisions before they can bring long-term benefits.
The chapter is confident that Tinubu’s administration will eventually deliver positive results through policies meant to boost economic growth, create jobs, and improve the welfare of citizens.
They noted that keeping democracy alive needs everyone to take responsibility. They called on political leaders from all parties to prioritize the national interest over party politics.
The group also urged the National Orientation Agency to enhance civic education and public awareness, especially for young people. This will encourage more participation in governance and raise awareness of government programs aimed at youth development.
June 12 is marked every year as Nigeria’s Democracy Day to honor the 1993 presidential election. This election is seen as the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history. The late Chief MKO Abiola is believed to have won this election, but it was annulled by the military, leading to widespread protests and stronger calls for democracy.
The date was officially recognized as Democracy Day in 2018. This was to honor the importance of the June 12 struggle and the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists who fought for civil rule.
Tinubu was among the key figures in the pro-democracy movement during the military rule. His administration has often highlighted June 12 as a crucial moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey and a reminder to strengthen democratic institutions.
