Nafeesat, the actress known for playing Maimuna in the popular Hausa drama Kaddara, has stirred up a debate online after sharing her thoughts on marriage. Her comments have divided opinions among social media users.
In a video that went viral, Nafeesat questioned why many women value marriage so highly. She feels it does not make sense for a woman to build her career and gain financial independence only to submit to another person's authority through marriage.
She stated that she does not want to be controlled by a man. “A woman works hard, builds her life and wealth, and then goes under someone else’s control because of marriage. I don’t see the reason for that,” she said.
Nafeesat also disputed the idea that marriage and having children ensure support in old age or after death. She believes that just because someone has children does not mean they will take care of their parents or pray for them. She shared that she has family members who love her and will remember her even after she is gone.
“For me, marriage is not on my agenda,” she said. “I can’t see myself under any man controlling me in the name of marriage.”
Mixed Reactions
The actress faced a lot of criticism, with many accusing her of spreading ideas that could turn young women against marriage and family life.
Aisha Sani pointed out that public figures should think about the messages they send out because these messages can influence their fans. “We understand that actors have personal opinions, but when those opinions are shared publicly, people are naturally going to react,” she said.
Another viewer, Abdullahi Garba, mentioned that the video affected his interest in Kaddara. “I stopped watching the series after seeing the video. It’s not about the programme itself; I simply disagree with the message,” he wrote.
Maryam Ibrahim argued that marriage should not be seen as a form of oppression. She noted that many successful marriages are based on mutual respect and understanding. Muntari Lawal also expressed worries about how celebrities can influence young people, saying they should be careful when talking about sensitive issues.
Supporters Defend the Actress
Not everyone supported the backlash against Nafeesat. Some social media users defended her by saying she simply shared her personal view and shouldn’t be attacked for it.
They emphasized that people have the right to choose if marriage fits their personal goals, and differing opinions should be respected.
Impact on Kaddara
This controversy has sparked a lot of conversation among fans of Kaddara, one of the most popular Hausa dramas in Northern Nigeria. While some viewers said Nafeesat’s comments changed how they see the show, others believe that an actor’s personal beliefs should not affect how people view their characters.
The debate has grown larger than just Nafeesat, leading to discussions about marriage, personal choices, gender roles, and the impact of celebrity influence. As of now, Nafeesat has not publicly addressed the backlash or clarified her comments.
