The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria in Kano has called on the state government to honor the 22 athletes who died in a car accident while coming back from the Ogun Gateway Games in 2025.

The association’s Secretary, Mr Muhammad Nur-Tijani, made this appeal in a statement on Sunday in Kano. This comes as they remember the one-year anniversary of the tragedy.

“SWAN suggests that a sports facility in the state be named after the deceased or a new facility be set up in their honor. This will help nurture young talents and promote the growth of future champions,” the statement said.

The statement mentioned that the athletes’ early death is a big loss for the sports community and the state. It highlights the need to recognize their contributions and keep their legacy alive.

“In memory of the fallen athletes, SWAN calls on the Kano State Government to celebrate their lives through lasting initiatives.

The association also asked the government to boost grassroots sports programs and improve facilities across the state. They stressed that these efforts are vital for finding and nurturing new athletes.

They encouraged athletes and sports fans to remember the departed in prayers. They suggested organizing tournaments in their memory. Such actions would celebrate their contributions and make sure their impact on Kano sports is not forgotten.

“May the memories of these athletes continue to inspire excellence, discipline, and passion within Kano State’s sports community,” the statement concluded.

NAN recalls that the 22 Kano athletes lost their lives a few kilometers away from Kano city on May 31, 2025, while returning from the Ogun Gateway Games.
