The Kano State Multi-Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking plans to rehabilitate over 10,000 drug users. They want to help these individuals leave the streets and get proper care.
The Chairman of the task force, Muhuyi Rimin Gado, shared this news while speaking to reporters at the agency’s headquarters on Tuesday.
Rimin Gado explained that the program will include rehabilitation and skill training. This way, the people helped can return to society equipped for a better life.
“Our target is to sweep 10,000 youths off the streets, rehabilitate them, and train them in skills acquisition, so that they can go back into society fully informed, reformed, and as people of trust and confidence to the community,” he said.
He mentioned that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has set up an additional facility in Tofa Local Government Area. This will serve as an extension of the Kano State Reformatory Institute in Kiru to meet the rising need for rehabilitation services.
According to him, this new facility will be ready for use right away. They want to ensure that anyone seeking help does not get turned away.
Rimin Gado pointed out that the new facility is necessary due to the increased acceptance of the task force’s work. Many families are now bringing their loved ones for effective treatment and reintegration.
“There has been a massive increase in demand for rehabilitation. Families now voluntarily bring their loved ones for effective treatment, rehabilitation and reintegration,” he said.
He added that the Kano State Reformatory Institute in Kiru is currently full, making it urgent to expand.
Rimin Gado also mentioned that the task force has responded to a complaint about the illegal use of Pentazocine on a 63-year-old woman by Yahuza Musa, the former Chairman of Rogo Local Government Area.
He said a 24-year-old man confirmed the claim. This man said he spent over N10 million and even gave a plot of land to buy the same injection from the former chairman.
“The former chairman has since been charged before a competent court of law and the case is ongoing,” Rimin Gado said.
He added that so far, the task force has referred about 125 people to the Kano Reformatory Institute in Kiru for rehabilitation. He emphasized that drug abuse is a condition that needs healing.
“For effective reintegration, the Task Force is engaging industrial stakeholders on possible strategies for creating employment, skills acquisition and other productive opportunities for youth who have undergone rehabilitation,” he said.
Rimin Gado praised the NDLEA, Police, DSS, NSCDC, customs, correctional service, KOSSAP, vigilante groups, Hisbah, KAROTA, and other agencies for their support in the task force’s work.
He also called on the public to keep providing useful information to the task force. This will help make the streets safer and create a better environment for businesses.
