Kano Residents Urged Not to Shelter Under Telecom Masts During Storms

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Kano State started a public awareness campaign on Friday. This campaign aims to educate people about the dangers of telecommunication masts during the rainy season. It also stresses the importance of protecting telecommunications infrastructure.

At the event, the NSCDC State Commandant, Mohammed Agalama, warned the public against interfering with telecom masts, underground cables, and power installations. He said that these actions are not only illegal but also put people's safety at risk.

Agalama pointed out that the heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds of the rainy season can create dangers near telecom installations. He urged residents to stay alert and avoid taking shelter under telecom masts when storms hit. He also asked people to report any damaged or suspicious installations to the nearest NSCDC office or other authorities.

“Telecommunication infrastructure remains a critical national asset that supports communication, security operations, emergency response, banking services, and economic activities,” Agalama said. He emphasized that everyone has a role to play in protecting these facilities.

He instructed all 44 divisional officers in Kano State to take the awareness campaign to the grassroots. They should engage traditional rulers, community leaders, market associations, youth groups, schools, religious institutions, and other stakeholders about the need to safeguard telecom infrastructure and follow safety measures during bad weather.

Agalama reaffirmed the corps' commitment to protecting all Critical National Assets and Infrastructure. He warned that anyone caught vandalizing or tampering with telecom facilities would face arrest and prosecution under the law.

The NSCDC chief asked the public to work with the corps by sharing trustworthy and timely information. This will help prevent vandalism and ensure that telecom services continue without interruptions across Kano State.

The Command’s Department of Critical National Assets and Infrastructure Protection, led by DCC Victor Bala Muhd, will oversee the campaign's implementation throughout the state.
