Kwara fire service saves rooms in Ilorin building blaze

A fire broke out in a storey building in Agbo Oba Area, Ilorin, Kwara State on Monday.

The Kwara State Fire Service saved 14 rooms from being destroyed after the fire incident in Ilorin West Local Government Area.

The fire started around 2:03 PM, damaging four out of the 18 rooms in the building before firefighters could control it.

Hassan Adekunle, the Head of Media and Publicity for the state fire service, confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday.

Adekunle said, "On Monday, 20th July 2026, at 14:03hrs, the Kwara State Fire Service responded to a fire outbreak at No. 40 Elesinla Compound, off Agbo-Oba Road, Ilorin West Local Government Area, Kwara State."

He added, "The incident involved a storey building comprising about fourteen (14) rooms, out of which four (4) rooms were affected by the fire."

When firefighters arrived, they quickly started working to put out the fire. They managed to control it by about 2:50 PM, stopping it from spreading to other rooms and nearby properties.

Preliminary investigations showed that the fire was caused by a power surge. This surge ignited flammable materials in the affected part of the building.

The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Chief Fire Superintendent Alabi Muhammed, advised residents to make sure their buildings have proper electrical installations and surge protection devices. This can help prevent issues from electrical problems.

He also urged property owners to regularly check and maintain their electrical wiring, avoid overloading sockets, and report fires quickly to the Fire Service for a fast response.

“The Kwara State Fire Service remains committed to safeguarding lives and property through rapid emergency response and sustained public fire safety awareness across the state,” the statement concluded.
