The 2026 Kwara Open Golf Championship will take place at the Ilorin Golf Club this weekend. About 100 golfers from over 15 clubs across Nigeria will come together in Kwara State's capital.
The tournament lasts for two days, starting today, October 10, and ending on October 11. It is one of the biggest amateur events on the golf calendar in the state. It has also become a sports tourism event, attracting players and visitors to Ilorin from all over the country.
The competition will include men, women, and veteran golfers. This gives players in each category a chance to win prizes. Over the years, this tournament has allowed Kwara’s top golfers to test their skills against players from well-known clubs across Nigeria.
Luqman Owolewa, the Captain of Ilorin Golf Club, said the tournament helps promote golf and strengthen connections within the golfing community.
"This event promotes the game in the state and is a platform that connects golfers across the country, especially players from neighbouring states," Owolewa said.
He also mentioned that the club’s hospitality and welcoming atmosphere are big draws for participants. This has helped to ensure a strong turnout over the years.
The influx of golfers and visitors is expected to highlight what Ilorin has to offer and increase economic activity in the state capital.
The Kwara State Government and several businesses support the event. Their backing continues to help develop golf in the state.
