Lagos pays tribute to actor Taiwo Hassan 'Ogogo'

Veteran actor and screenwriter Taiwo "Ogogo" Hassan has passed away, and the Lagos State Government is in mourning. They described him as a cultural icon and a proud representative of Yoruba heritage.

The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture in Lagos shared their condolences with the actor’s family, friends, colleagues, and the broader Nollywood community.

In a statement released on Sunday, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, the state Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, said that Hassan's impact on the entertainment industry was much more than just acting.

"Taiwo Hassan was more than an actor. He was a custodian of culture, a gifted storyteller, and a proud ambassador of Yoruba heritage," she said.

Benson-Awoyinka noted that the late actor entertained many generations while also showcasing and preserving Yoruba cultural values through his performances.

"He dedicated many years to promoting Yoruba culture, theatre, and the entertainment industry. His work shaped the cultural landscape of Lagos State and Nigeria. He leaves a lasting legacy that will inspire future generations," she added.

The commissioner said the ministry shared the sadness of Hassan’s family and the creative community. She called his death a significant loss to the cultural and entertainment sectors.

"We pray that Almighty God grants his soul eternal rest and gives his family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones the strength to bear this irreplaceable loss," Benson-Awoyinka stated.

Ogogo died on Sunday evening after a fight with cancer. His death led to an outpouring of tributes from Nigerians, including celebrities and politicians.

The actor, well-known in Yoruba-language Nollywood, passed away just days after his daughters called for public help as he faced stage-four cancer.
