The Lagos State Police Command is looking into a case of extortion involving a dispatch rider. The rider claims he paid ₦20,000 to police officers from the Makinde Divisional Headquarters.

This information came out in a statement on Monday. It followed the sharing of a video showing the incident on social media.

The police did not know that the rider had a hidden camera before they stopped him and asked for money, according to the video that was shared.

“The Lagos State Police Command is aware of the video and has commenced an investigation into the incident,” the statement said.

The police identified the officers involved as those working at the Makinde Divisional Headquarters. They have reported to the headquarters for questioning.

“In line with the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, psc, mnips, the officers involved have reported at the Command Headquarters and are currently being interviewed as part of the ongoing investigation,” the statement added.

The dispatch rider, whose name is still unknown, claimed that the officers took ₦20,000 from him. But the police did not provide details about this alleged transaction or confirm the amount in their statement.

They assured the public that the investigation would find out what happened and decide the right action against any officer found guilty.

“The Command assures the public that the investigation is ongoing and appropriate action will be taken based on its findings,” the statement noted.

As of Monday, the police did not say if any of the officers had been arrested or faced any punishment.

This incident is not surprising. Just weeks ago, a Lagos resident named Nasir Ahmed accused three policemen of extorting him. He said they stopped his vehicle on the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway and claimed he was driving against traffic.

Ahmed shared with PUNCH Online on Saturday that he had to borrow money from friends during that incident.
