The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit, known as the Taskforce, has seized 66 commercial motorcycles, called okadas, for breaking the state's transport rules.
CSP Adetayo Akerele, the Taskforce Chairman, shared this news in a statement from the agency's spokesperson, Mr Abdulraheem Gbadeyan, on Tuesday in Lagos.
Akerele explained that the motorcycles were taken during an operation on Monday in various areas of Lagos Island.
He said the operation aimed to stop illegal okada activities and other behaviors that create problems and security risks.
The enforcement team visited places like CMS Bus Stop, Obalende, Osborne Roundabout, Abraham Adesanya Road, Lekki-Ajah Expressway, and the Lagos Coastal Road.
Akerele mentioned that the riders were found using restricted roads and causing issues for drivers and other road users.
"During the operation, 66 commercial motorcycles were impounded, while normalcy was restored in the affected areas," he said.
The chairman noted that the agency is stepping up its intelligence gathering and tactical actions to remove illegal okada operations from banned highways, bridges, and other restricted areas in the state.
He stated that some stubborn operators have come up with different ways to avoid the law, but he believes the agency's smart approach will make it harder for them to operate illegally.
Akerele warned that future operations will not only target illegal motorcycle operators but also passengers who break the law.
He reminded everyone that all seized motorcycles will be handed over to the Lagos State Government through the courts, following the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018.
Akerele confirmed the agency's dedication to continuing these enforcement actions across the state until everyone follows the rules.
