The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit has seized 278 commercial motorcycles in a weeklong operation. This crackdown targeted operators breaking the state’s ban on Okada activities.

The Chairman of the Task Force, CSP Adetayo Akerele, revealed this in a statement signed by the agency’s spokesperson, Mr Abdulraheem Gbadeyan, on Sunday in Lagos.

Akerele mentioned that the operation was part of the Lagos State Government’s directive against commercial motorcycles operating on highways and other restricted areas.

This restriction is outlined in the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.

He explained that the purpose of the operation is to boost security, protect lives and property, and stop criminal activities across the state.

The chairman noted that the operation supports the renewed commitment of the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Mr Fatai Tijani, to maintain security and public order.

Akerele said this weeklong enforcement followed an earlier operation that took place weeks ago.

He emphasized that the agency is determined to keep pressure on those breaking traffic, environmental, and security laws.

Areas Covered

The operation spanned many locations, including Ikorodu, Agric Bus Stop, Festac First Gate, Mazamaza, Iyana School, and Iyana-Iba.

Other areas included Idimu Road, Egbeda, Kola Bus Stop, Iyana Ipaja, Ikotun Roundabout, Ajaiye in Ojokoro, and Berger Bus Stop.

The Task Force boss reported that many commercial motorcycle operators were caught illegally riding on highways and restricted routes.

"Some were found using motorcycles to transport illicit substances and dangerous items such as petroleum products and gas.

"Others were carrying school children and toddlers in unsafe conditions on major roads," he said.

Impact of the Operation

Akerele pointed out that the operation helped restore order and improve compliance in the affected areas.

He added that all seized motorcycles would go through the courts for forfeiture to the state.

This action follows the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.

The chairman assured that the agency is committed to ongoing enforcement until everyone complies.

"We will not be intimidated or sit back and let people with bad intentions take over Lagos or allow their illegal actions to continue," Akerele said.
