Flying Eagles aim for final and AFCON spot against Côte d'Ivoire

Nigeria's Flying Eagles will face hosts Côte d'Ivoire in the WAFU B U20 Championship semi-final on Wednesday evening. A spot in the final on Sunday and a ticket to next year's Africa U20 Cup of Nations are both at stake.

The defending champions are ready for the match at Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro. They know they have a tough challenge ahead against an Ivorian team that has won every match without conceding a goal.

Nigeria reached the semi-finals as runners-up in Group B. This happened despite a disappointing 2-0 loss to Burkina Faso in their last group match. That defeat denied the Flying Eagles top spot in the group and showed some weaknesses in their defense. Head coach Abdu Maikaba said these issues must be fixed if they want to move forward.

On Tuesday, Maikaba spoke about his team's defensive discipline as their main worry. "We need to improve on our defensive approach to the game. Most especially in our last game, we conceded two goals from similar situations, and we are not happy about that," he said.

Maikaba explained that the coaching staff has worked hard on these defensive situations during training. Yet, he noted that lapses in concentration have cost the team. "We have taught the players how to defend such balls. Sometimes, during the course of the game, they forget and make little mistakes which will cost us the game.

"We will make sure that we address them very well and ensure they concentrate all through the game and do not make such silly mistakes in the semi-final stage."

Changes to the starting line-up are expected as Maikaba looks for better defensive strength against a strong Côte d'Ivoire team. The Young Elephants have impressed in the tournament, winning all their group matches, scoring seven goals, and not letting in any goals. With local fans cheering them on, they are confident in their ability to stop Nigeria's title defense.

This match also brings back a growing rivalry between Nigeria and Côte d'Ivoire. In last year’s WAFU B Championship in Togo, Nigeria came from behind to win 2-1 against Côte d'Ivoire in their group stage. Clinton Jephta equalized after the hosts scored first, and Kparobo Arierhi scored the winner, sending Nigeria to the semi-finals, where they eventually won the trophy.

The Ivorians are eager to take revenge for that loss on their home ground. Nigeria, on the other hand, hopes that history will repeat itself.

There's more than just bragging rights on the line in this match. The winner will not only progress to the final on Sunday but also secure a spot in next year’s Africa U20 Cup of Nations alongside Ghana, the host nation.
