The Enugu State Ministry of Transport has stopped all traffic task force activities on federal highways in the state right away.
This ban was announced in a statement on Monday by Kenneth Ugwu, the Commander of the Enugu State Traffic Management Authority. He shared the news with reporters.
Ugwu explained that this decision is part of the government's plan to fight against fake enforcement officials who are extorting money from drivers.
He said the ministry made this choice after getting reports about people pretending to be officials of the Ministry of Transport. These people have been operating on federal highways, bothering and taking money from motorists.
"Their action damages the image of the ministry. To fix this, we have set up a special team to find and catch those involved in these illegal activities," he stated.
Ugwu mentioned that some suspected fake task force members were recently caught while allegedly taking money from drivers in various areas of the state capital.
The commander said that the suspects are being questioned and will be taken to court according to the law.
The ministry is asking the public and drivers to quickly report any real complaints or encounters with suspected fake task force officials to the commander’s office.
He warned that anyone found bothering or extorting drivers while pretending to be traffic enforcement officials will be arrested and face serious consequences.
