The Department of State Services has arrested a man named Moferewa Maiye. He is accused of pretending to be a DSS officer and using a fake gun to extort money from travelers and drivers in Abuja.
PUNCH Metro found out on Thursday that Maiye was caught late on Wednesday. DSS operatives arrested him at his hideout near NITEL Junction, along Adetokunbo Ademola Way, Wuse II, Abuja. This followed reliable information received by the Service.
When they arrested him, Maiye was wearing a DSS tactical uniform. He also had a fake pistol with him.
A source from security said the suspect had been using the uniform and weapon to scare travelers and drivers. He allegedly collected money from them under threat.
The source shared that Maiye claimed to be from Agbajojun Village in Mopamuro Local Government Area of Kogi State. He told investigators that his brother was a DSS officer who died several years ago.
According to the source, Maiye named his late brother as Monday Maiye. He claimed the DSS uniform and other items found with him belonged to his brother.
"Investigators are also trying to find out how long the suspect has been involved in similar acts of impersonation and extortion," the source said.
PUNCH Metro learned that Maiye is still in DSS custody. He is being questioned, while investigators look into how he got the DSS uniform and other tactical gear.
The source mentioned that the arrest shows the Service’s increasing worry about people pretending to be security officers. These individuals often intimidate the public and commit crimes.
"The arrest shows the growing concern by the Service about people who impersonate security personnel to scare the public and engage in criminal acts," the source added.
