The Lagos State Government is planning to ban the sale of sachet alcoholic drinks at motor parks. This move aims to reduce reckless driving and lower road crashes.

Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, the Secretary to the State Government, shared this news on Tuesday. She spoke during a meeting with local government secretaries and members of the Police Community Relations Committee.

Salu-Hundeyin explained that the proposed ban is one of the steps to improve security and road safety. This is especially important during the Ember months when more people travel and traffic increases.

She said, “We have discussed the issue of security because we know this is Ember month. We have always been discussing security issues. Transportation is part of security, including the garages (motor parks) where some of these drivers would have taken some alcohol.”

She added, “We are carrying out a campaign to discourage this. I have already elevated this to Mr Governor at our higher security meetings that those garages (motor parks) should be banned from selling alcoholic drinks because some of these drivers consume them and then start driving recklessly on the road and put lives in danger.”

This proposed ban comes as the state faces concerns over road crash fatalities.

The Federal Road Safety Corps has not yet released road crash statistics for 2026. However, the Lagos State Sector Command reported that 91 people died in road crashes from January to November 2025.

Kehinde Hamzat, the Lagos Sector Commander of the FRSC, shared this information in December 2025. He answered questions about road crash statistics during a press briefing at the Sector Command in Ojodu-Berger, Lagos.

The briefing was held to mark the annual Don’t Drink and Drive Campaign. It was organized in partnership with the Beer Sectoral Group of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria.

The FRSC also reported that 128 people died in 376 road crashes in Lagos between January and October 2023.
