Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes has praised Victor Boniface after the Nigerian striker scored a fantastic winner against Newcastle United in a pre-season match, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Boniface came off the bench in the final minutes and made the difference in Leverkusen’s 2-1 victory. He tricked his defender with a clever dummy before calmly putting the ball into the bottom corner.
Rolfes was excited about the goal, especially Boniface’s ability to shine in front of a big crowd.
“He scored a fantastic goal. We’re very happy for Boni that he managed to score in front of such a crowd,” Rolfes told BILD.
Boniface’s Skills Shine
The Leverkusen director also pointed out the 25-year-old’s movement and skill to create chances under pressure from defenders.
“When the opponent blocks like that and then makes that movement inside, that’s quality. And when the opponent doesn’t block, he blasts the ball towards goal with incredible speed,” he said.
Rolfes thinks this goal is a good sign that Boniface is starting to get back to the form that made him a dangerous player before his injury issues.
“The fact that he’s capable of those kinds of moves again is a positive development,” he added.
Boniface’s Journey at Leverkusen
Boniface joined Leverkusen from Union Saint-Gilloise in 2023 and scored 21 goals with nine assists in his first season as the club won the Bundesliga title without losing a match.
But injuries have held him back, affecting his consistency and forcing him to have surgery after a tough loan at Werder Bremen.
His latest performance will give him hope as he works to regain full fitness and secure a spot in Leverkusen’s plans for the new season.
The Nigerian will now aim to build on the goal against Newcastle and stay injury-free as he looks to turn his career around in Germany.
