Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface kicked off Bayer Leverkusen’s pre-season with a bang, scoring two goals in a strong 7-0 win against fifth-tier team SF Baumberg on Saturday.
The friendly match celebrated the opening of Baumberg’s new MEGA Stadion. It was also the first game for Leverkusen under their new coach Carles Martínez.
Martínez changed his lineup throughout the two halves, each lasting 35 minutes. Portuguese winger Afonso Moreira netted two goals, and new signing Christian Kofane added another, giving the Bundesliga team a 3-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Boniface took center stage, scoring two goals in just five minutes. This showed he is in good form despite talk about his future at the club.
Captain Robert Andrich scored Leverkusen’s sixth goal with a long-range shot. Fellow Nigerian Nathan Tella wrapped up the scoreline with a close-range goal late in the match.
This performance is a good sign for Boniface after a tough 2025/26 season filled with injuries.
The 25-year-old had surgery in January that kept him out for several months. This recovery affected both his club games and national team duties.
But Saturday’s game should lift Boniface’s spirits as he looks forward to the new season. It also strengthens his position as Martínez evaluates his players. Leverkusen will keep preparing with an open training session on Tuesday. Some players are set to join the squad later after finishing their international duties.
