Bayer Leverkusen has not included Victor Boniface in their Europa League squad for the trip to Greece. Instead, they have chosen Jonas Hofmann to take the place of the injured Martin Terrier, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
The club was allowed to make changes to their European squad after Terrier suffered a serious muscle injury during last Thursday’s 4-0 victory over Lech Poznan. The French forward is likely to be out until December.
Hofmann will travel for the Europa League match against OFI Crete on Thursday.
This is another disappointment for Boniface, who has struggled to find his footing since coming back from Bremen. The 25-year-old has played only one game this season. He was on the pitch for five minutes and assisted in a goal during the opening match, which ended in a 3-2 loss to newly promoted SV Elversberg. He has not played since under the new coach Carles Martinez.
Boniface is also facing tough competition for a spot in the attack. Patrik Schick is currently ahead of him, and Christian Kofane is out with injury.
Boniface caught attention during the 4-3 win over Mainz 05 when he left the stadium before the game ended. He was frustrated at not being used. He later admitted that leaving early was a mistake, but it did not help his situation.
Martinez said he did not notice Boniface leaving during the match. “If that is what happened, we will speak to him,” he said.
There were also rumors about Boniface being sold in January 2025. A €70 million transfer to Al-Nassr fell through at the last minute.
