Tottenham Hotspur's Egyptian midfielder Omar Marmoush was celebrated by his teammates after scoring the second goal during the English Premier League match against Coventry City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London on October 19, 2026.
James Maddison made a remarkable return to Tottenham’s starting line-up after being out for 17 months. Spurs beat Coventry 3-1 to get their first Premier League win of the season.
The England midfielder had not played much since May 2025, when he suffered two serious knee injuries. Maddison wasted no time, scoring in the 14th minute with a brilliant strike from outside the box.
Jack Rudoni equalized early in the second half, but the home team regained the lead just before the hour mark. Omar Marmoush scored his first goal for the club, and substitute Ben Davies secured the win late on.
Roberto De Zerbi’s team entered the match at the bottom of the Premier League. They had the unfortunate record of being the only team in England’s top six divisions without a league win this season, despite spending a lot over the summer.
To turn things around, the Spurs boss took the team to Marbella in southern Spain for warm-weather training. He included Maddison in the starting line-up, and Sweden midfielder Dejan Kulusevski returned to the matchday squad for the first time in 17 months.
Maddison had ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in August 2025, just three months after injuring the same knee. The 29-year-old quickly made an impact, scoring in the 14th minute after a great setup from Mohammed Kudus.
Maddison was positioned just outside the penalty area. He received the ball from Kudus and curled it past Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth into the top corner. The home fans erupted in celebration.
Tottenham looked to dominate but Frank Lampard’s newly promoted Coventry, fresh from two wins, fought back. Maddison nearly made it 2-0 after half an hour, but his shot went just wide.
Despite Tottenham's pressure, Coventry found the equalizer in the 49th minute with a close-range shot from Rudoni. Spurs lost possession in the Coventry half, and the visitors quickly took advantage. Rudoni's cross hit a teammate but fell perfectly for him to score.
Just nine minutes later, Spurs regained the lead. Former Manchester City player Marmoush held off Milan van Ewijk and fired in a powerful shot. Kulusevski, back from injury, came on in the final minutes to a warm welcome from the fans.
Veteran Davies made sure of the three points in added time, scoring from the edge of the penalty area. At last, Tottenham could relax and enjoy their win.
