Operatives of the Enugu State Police have arrested a 30-year-old man named Okpara Emmanuel for allegedly killing his girlfriend.
The victim was known as Chinyere, but her surname, age, and address are not known yet.
Emmanuel was caught at his home in Olympic Layout, One-Day, Enugu. This information was shared in a statement by the police spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, at the State Headquarters GRA, Enugu.
During questioning, Emmanuel admitted to killing Chinyere after they had an argument about who was responsible for a Human Immunodeficiency Virus infection. He said he hit her with a pestle during the fight, which led to her death.
"On September 21, 2026, at about 6:30 pm, we received reports that he allegedly murdered his girlfriend. Preliminary investigation shows he likely killed her on September 19. He wrapped her body in nylon and locked it in the toilet of his apartment.
"The bad smell from the decomposing body made the neighbors suspicious. They forced the door open and caught him before the police arrived. The remains were taken to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy. Efforts are on to find and notify her family," the statement said.
Ndukwe mentioned that the suspect was saved from an angry mob by police officers from Awkunanaw Division.
The State Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, has instructed the State Criminal Investigation Department to look into the case and ensure the suspect is taken to court after the investigation.
The police boss advised the public, especially young women, to tell trusted friends or family about their movements. They should also be careful about who they visit or spend time with.
In a video shared on Tuesday by a user on X, a man with blood on his face was seen among a group of men who were not identified.
Another man entered the house and opened a door. Inside, the decomposing body of a woman was found lying on the floor.
