Man Arrested for Killing Ex-Girlfriend and Hiding Body in Sack

The police in Anambra State have arrested a man named Chima Ofoeke. He is accused of killing his ex-girlfriend, Mmesoma Umeorini, in Uga, a community in Aguata Local Government Area.

Tochukwu Ikenga, the police spokesperson in Anambra State, shared this news in a statement on Saturday.

Ikenga, who is a superintendent of police, said the arrest happened after the victim’s mother reported her missing to the Divisional Police Officer in Umuchu Division. Mmesoma had been missing since 16 October.

"Acting on intelligence-led information, police operatives, with support from the Agunechemba security outfit in Uga, arrested the suspect. He was identified as the deceased’s former boyfriend," he said.

The spokesperson revealed that the suspect is from Ebonyi State. During questioning, he admitted he killed Mmesoma because she ended their relationship.

He then took police detectives to the spot where they found the victim’s remains. Ikenga mentioned that the Commissioner of Police in Anambra, Nnanna Ama, has ordered that the case be sent to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka. This is for a full and careful investigation.

Commissioner Ama reminded everyone that the police in the state are dedicated to protecting lives and property. He urged the public to quickly report missing persons and any suspicious activities to the right authorities.

"Further developments will be communicated as the investigation progresses," he promised.

A video clip shared by PREMIUM TIMES showed the moment security operatives arrested the suspect and questioned him.

In the video, the suspect was holding a dirty sack and admitted it contained the body of his ex-girlfriend.

He confessed that he killed Mmesoma on a Friday after she broke up with him. When asked how he did it, he replied in Igbo: "I held her neck with her clothes and strangled her until she collapsed."

Some voices in the background of the clip suggested that the victim's body might have been cut into pieces to fit into the sack.
