A Yobe State High Court in Damaturu sentenced a 45-year-old man, Abubakar Musa, known as Daddy, to death by hanging for killing his wife, Ammi Adamu Mamman.
The court, led by Chief Judge G.K. Kaigama, gave the judgment after listening to the case and the testimony from eight witnesses for the prosecution.
Musa was arrested by the Yobe State Police on January 4, 2024, after his 42-year-old wife died at their home in New Bra-Bra Housing Estate, Damaturu. He faced charges of culpable homicide.
According to the police, Musa reported that he found his wife with a stab wound in her neck while they were asleep in the same bed.
He told the police that he woke up to his wife's screams and saw her bleeding from a stab wound.
Musa claimed he saw a man with a knife and, when he confronted him, two others helped the man escape.
During the trial, Musa pleaded not guilty, insisting that intruders had come into their home and killed his wife.
While delivering the judgment, Justice Kaigama found Musa guilty of culpable homicide. He ruled that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.
The judge dismissed Musa's not guilty plea, stating that the prosecution met all necessary requirements of the offense.
Justice Kaigama told Musa he could appeal the judgment within 30 days, as allowed by law.
