The Kano State High Court in Kano sentenced Shuaibu Abdulkadir to death by hanging on Friday. He was found guilty of killing a 23-year-old housewife, Rumasa’u Shuaibu.

Mr Abdulkadir lives in Chediyar Kuda, Shauchi Quarters, Kano. He faced charges of culpable homicide.

Justice Farida Rabiu-Danbappa delivered the judgement, stating the prosecution proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

“I find Shuaibu Abdulkadir guilty. I hereby sentence you to death by hanging for culpable homicide. May Allah have mercy on your soul. You have 90 days to appeal,” the judge said.

Earlier in the court, the prosecution lawyer, Basiru Kabiru-Ali, said Mr Abdulkadir committed the crime on 6 April 2025, in Farawa Quarters, Kano. He explained that Mr Abdulkadir killed Ms Shuaibu, who was a friend of his girlfriend.

The prosecution presented three witnesses and submitted seven pieces of evidence. This included a confessional statement, a photograph, and the mobile phone of the deceased.

Mr Abdulkadir denied killing Ms Shuaibu, which the prosecution said violated Section 221 of the Penal Code.

Defence lawyer, Mustapha Idris, called Mr Abdulkadir to testify in his own defence. He asked the court for leniency, saying his client is a first-time offender who has shown remorse for his actions.
