Manchester United has confirmed the signing of Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa. The deal is said to be worth £35 million, which is around $47 million.
The 29-year-old has signed a five-year contract at Old Trafford. He recently returned from the World Cup, where he led Belgium to the quarter-finals.
Tielemans is the club’s third signing this summer. The team had already brought in midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea and goalkeeper Karl Darlow from Leeds.
“It’s hard to describe just how proud I am to join Manchester United,” Tielemans said. “Signing for such a special club feels incredible. It is the culmination of years of dedication since I first fell in love with football.
“I have had the privilege of experiencing success in the game and it has only increased my determination to achieve more. The ambition from everyone at the club is extremely clear, we are all determined to push for the biggest trophies over the coming years.”
United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, praised Tielemans. He called him one of the best midfielders in the Premier League in recent years. “He has all of the technical qualities, as well as the ambition and mentality, to thrive at Manchester United,” Wilcox said.
Tielemans joined Aston Villa in 2023 on a free transfer from Leicester City. At Leicester, he won the FA Cup. He played an important role for Unai Emery’s team, which qualified for the Champions League and won the Europa League last season.
Unfortunately, Tielemans missed Belgium’s 2-1 loss to Spain in the World Cup quarter-finals due to an injury. United is focusing on strengthening their midfield after losing Casemiro and with Manuel Ugarte’s knee injury from the World Cup.
The club announced the signing of Brazilian midfielder Santos from Chelsea on Monday for a fee of £50 million. Last season, United finished third in the Premier League under new manager Michael Carrick, securing a spot in the Champions League.
