Mbappe Makes History with Second World Cup Golden Boot

France forward Kylian Mbappe has made history. He is the first player ever to win the FIFA World Cup Golden Boot twice. He achieved this after being the top scorer at the 2026 tournament.

The 27-year-old scored 10 goals in eight matches. He outscored Argentina captain Lionel Messi to take home the award. Mbappe also won the Golden Boot at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with eight goals.

The BBC reported that the Real Madrid star is the first player to win the top scorer prize in two consecutive World Cups. His 10 goals also made him the first player to hit double figures in a single men's World Cup since West Germany's Gerd Muller, who scored 10 goals in 1970. Only France's Just Fontaine, with 13 goals in 1958, and Hungary's Sandor Kocsis, with 11 goals in 1954, have scored more in one tournament.

Mbappe also climbed to the top of the all-time men's World Cup scoring chart with 22 goals. He is now one goal ahead of Messi.

Mbappe passed Messi after scoring two goals in France's third-place play-off against England. Sadly, his efforts could not save France from a 6-4 defeat, leaving Didier Deschamps' team in fourth place.

He scored goals at every stage of the competition. He had braces against Senegal and Iraq in the group stage, another against Sweden in the round of 32, a penalty win against Paraguay in the round of 16, and a goal against Morocco in the quarter-finals.

Messi came into the World Cup final on Sunday with a chance to surpass Mbappe if he scored a hat-trick. But the 39-year-old could not find the net as Argentina lost 1-0 to Spain in New Jersey. Messi finished the tournament with eight goals in eight matches.

England midfielder Jude Bellingham and Norway striker Erling Haaland ended with seven goals each. Meanwhile, France's Ousmane Dembele and England captain Harry Kane scored six goals each.
